The Difference Between Three and Two

Nowaki stared at one of Hiroki's bookshelves, a small frown upon his lips.

"What's with your sudden interest in my books?"

Emerging from the steamy bathroom, Hiroki toweled his wet hair as he approached Nowaki from behind. He came up next to him, offering a curious tilt of the head.

"It's nothing," Nowaki said quickly, stepping away. He kissed Hiroki on the forehead, tugging damp brown locks behind an ear. "I should go. My shift starts soon."

"Um, okay. See you later." Hiroki said nothing more as he watched Nowaki pick up his bag and shut the door to Hiroki's apartment behind him.

He looked back at his bookshelf. What had caught Nowaki's eye? The two hadn't been going out for long; Hiroki wasn't sure what might have caused the appearance of that rare frown.

"Ah," he exclaimed softly. Nowaki's sight would have been level with his shelf of Akihiko's novels.

"Ridiculous..." he murmured under his breath, turning away. Nowaki had to realize that he had given up on Akihiko and was very much aware that they were together now. Still, Nowaki's expression made Hiroki feel unsettled. He glanced over his shoulder again but shook it off.

Two days later, Nowaki returned. Hiroki found him staring at his bookshelf once again and sighed in irritation. "What?"

Nowaki looked confused. "…Hiro-san?"

"Why do you keep staring at my bookshelf like it's sleeping with me too?"

"Um, err, it's nothing," Nowaki said, waving his hands a little. He seemed embarrassed by Hiroki's remark – to Hiroki's annoyance.

"It's not 'nothing'," Hiroki growled, putting his hands on his hips with an air of impatience. "You keep doing it. Spill it already."

Nowaki flinched imperceptibly. "But you'll think it's silly, Hiro-san..."

Hiroki scoffed. "I think a lot of the things you do are silly, you romantic pervert. How is this any different?"

"Well, it's just…" Nowaki sighed. "You've bought three issues of each of Usami-san's books. I understand you're a fan of his writing, but part of me can't help thinking maybe…"

Hiroki frowned. "I'm supporting Akihiko because I consider him to be a great writer and a great friend of mine."

"I suppose..." Nowaki said quietly, though Hiroki could tell he still felt uneasy.

The following day, a new novel by Usami Akihiko came out. Hiroki was as excited as always to read it, making his way over to the closest bookstore the moment he found free time.

Utilizing his death glare, he waded easily through the crowd surrounding the table that featured new releases. With three issues in hand, he approached the register, though he looked down at them hesitantly as the line began to shorten.

Nowaki visited Hiroki that night. This time it was his turn to tilt his head curiously at Hiroki's bookshelf.

"Hiro-san, this new book..."

"What about it?" Hiroki said, standing beside him.

"You only have two issues."

"That's all I decided to buy." Hiroki paused and took a breath. "I…know what you were thinking before. Stop it." He blushed, unable to meet Nowaki's inquiring eyes. "W-We're going out now. I know this and so do you, so stop thinking like that. I don't like spouting dumb cliché lines, but honestly – honestly! — what's in the past is in the past. A-and we all have to make sacrifices, right? I mean, one less book can't hurt m-"

Nowaki grabbed Hiroki and squeezed him breathless. "Thank you, Hiro-san." He kissed him affectionately on the jaw. "I realize I'm being petty, but it means a lot to me that you care enough to do something about it."

"W-whatever," Hiroki mumbled. His curt tone was a weak attempt at hiding how much Nowaki's words pleased him, how much Nowaki himself brought Hiroki happiness. He closed his arms around Nowaki's back and, mussing his hair in the process, smiled into the younger man's chest.
